Madoc Ailak's girls are flourishing at school
Okipi Samuel is the head teacher at Madoc Ailak Primary School in the Kumi district of Uganda. He has noticed large improvements at the school over the years.
“Girls are performing well, and they now have hope of continuing with their education. They say they are happy because they are treated the same as boys, and the new toilets provide the privacy they need to continue at school during their menstruation.”
“Early marriage is still a problem. We teach girls that they must abstain and stay in school. The teachers are trained to counsel them and to provide guidance. Other people see that this is a good school, and enrolment is going up as a result.”
Emuron Leo, SMC member, added, “Our training has helped us look after the children. Education of girls is a priority: we tell them to come to school when they have their periods, and we supply them with sanitary towels. They shouldn’t fear because it is a natural thing. Parents know what to do as well: they buy them knickers and towels. Girls are fully included in school.”
